Singapore and its sports

Sports are a very common name in Singapore. In Singapore sports has been popular since the colonial times. But with the changing society that covers society, economy, and polity the trend has really changed a lot. In present days one can find active participation from the populace. The traditional games like the capteh, congkak, gasing and sepak are now declining in their fame and reputation. You can find all these games in Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand. One can also find that certain traditional games are still played in the households. The Singaporean government now promotes sports in Singapore. This is done in order to create a healthy and strong society and also to nurture a greater national unity. Singapore Sports Council is in charge of this action i.e. promotion of sports in Singapore.

The popular sports in Singapore include swimming, football, badminton, table tennis, and basketball. You can get the facilities for sports like basketballs, swimming, and other indoor games at the residential areas. On the other hand the water sports in Singapore include kayaking, sailing and water skiing. The important diving sites in Singapore include Pulau Habtu. This is an excellent place popular for its reefs. In Singapore you can feel adventurous when you enjoy scuba diving or windsurfing. People are very enthusiastic here and enjoy all types of interesting games.

The most popular sport in Singapore is football. The S. League comprises of 10 teams that compete with each other all through the year. To encourage more sports in Singapore i.e. to conserve the sports heritage of Singapore, the Sports Museum contains the Singapore sports history. This is located at West Entrance of the National Stadium. The main motto of this museum is to inform, educate and also entertain the public of Singapore. You can get the feel of Singapore’s sporting heritage. The National Physical Fitness Award was organized in Singapore in the year 1982. It requires a mandatory participation from all the students within the primary and secondary education.
